Last week participants attended the Archetype Sustainable House Tour to gain insight into innovative green technologies such as solar power, geothermal heating, and rainwater harvesting 💧☀️The participants were able to see how these technologies are applied to real-life scenarios to shape the future in eco-friendly construction.

Researchers from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) developed a thermoelectric device that can harvest energy using body heat. The device was built using silver nanowires, which enabled the substrate to have low resistance and high flexibility. Metals with high conductivity were also incorporated to increase heat transfer capacity. This flexible thermoelectric device has the potential to be used for operating wearables such as high-temperature gloves without needing a battery.

Researchers have developed windows that contain distilled water and ethylene glycol between panels of glass. These windows serve as solar collectors and absorb radiation for heating purposes. Energy efficiency is maintained using the flow of liquid in the windows. In colder temperatures, the water stops flowing to keep the absorbed heat in the room, while in hotter temperatures, the water flows throughout different parts of the building to redistribute energy. This technology could help contribute to net zero energy buildings.

Using semi-transparent organic solar panels, power could be generated using wavelengths of light that are not involved in photosynthesis. This enables plant growth and energy production at the same time. After considering different locations, researchers found that greenhouses in warmer climates could become energy neutral, while those in colder climates could fulfill almost half of their energy demand using organic solar cells.
